day 65 - 8 km
Ozeljan - Nova Gorica
It is the hottest day yet, 35 degrees I estimate. All sorts of chores in the morning, from fixing the tire of the car at the garage to painting the dotted line on the big map, conversations with Leo the landlord, to writing the report, all the socials and emails. By two o’clock we were biking in the heat to Nova Gorica, on the bike fortunately it is manageable. In Nova Gorica near the border between Slovenia and Italy we end up in two groups of tourists who were doing some kind of tour. We tell them what we are doing and there is a very positive response and many pictures are taken. A nice welcome. We cycle on to Europe Square in front of the station where Theo puts the finishing touches to our exhibit in the station with pasting the large map on the floor. It looks beautiful. We cycle a few laps around the center circle of Europa Square and Katja and Sasa join us. We were supposed to gather at the EPEC building a little further away but this seems better. We unfold our big map and Sasa and I give a short speech about our project, me in English, Sasa in Italian and Slovenian. A warm welcome. We also seem to be in the newspaper. We then cycle with a group to the little square in the center of Nova Gorica and put the map there as well. It is less crowded here and we have a drink on the terrace. Also nice with this heat. We fold up the map again and bike together to the university where the tree bike is allowed to stand in the shade in some kind of courtyard. They will take care of the watering for the next few weeks. Very nice. We can also add the small trees that Theo brought with him and they will water them regularly. And we can park the bus and trailer in the private parking lot of the university when we are away. That too is well arranged. Totally great. Sasa and Katja still have to continue preparations for the Uniscape Landscape Festival from June 23 to 26 and we have dinner at Atmosfera, the same place as yesterday but outside, opposite Hotel Entourage. I notice that I am quite tired and I think that applies to all of us. We should be proud of ourselves for getting this done. And even though we are only halfway through it feels like we are there. And that’s actually true, we only have to cycle back. We eat an ice cream and drive to our cottage in Ozeljan. A nice little welcome today in Nova Gorica. But then it is also part one of three of our activities in GO2025. In addition to this action today, in one week we will have the three-day Uniscape festival and then on July nine we will leave Gorizia for the second half and hopefully cycle with a group into Italy.
day 66 - sunday, june 15
Nova Gorica
The tree and the team are taking a well-deserved break. Not that nothing more is happening but the Tree Bike is taking a three-week break. The team travels to the Netherlands where, on June 21, the longest day of the year, a Birthday Forest will be placed on the A10, as part of the Amsterdam 750 celebrations. The organization is running and everything has been arranged. Richard is helping with filming and I am helping with directions for placing the trees so that the best possible image is achieved. This happens on the night of June 20-21. On the morning of the 21st, the forest will be officially opened and from what I have heard of it, it will be busy on the A10. The next morning, the 22nd, we leave early for Nova Gorica again because the Uniscape Landscape Festival – ‘On the borders of the planet’ – starts there on the 23rd, where I will be one of the speakers. We will also hold a Circle4Change workshop there with students from Europe. Then there will be a few days of rest before leaving on July nine for the second half of the circle. From Gorizia we will then cycle toward Venice where we hope to arrive July 13. This report will take a break and come back on the air July eight. It was a wonderful, inspiring and also spirited first half. I am very curious to see what the second half will bring. But first, as I said, enjoy the result achieved and the well-deserved rest.
