Fri 9 May

Koryta

day 29 - 82 km

Dabroszym (PL) / Küstriner Vorland (D) - Kosobudz

It is a little before ten when Richard and I cycle from our residence along the dike toward the bridge over the Oder. For the first twenty kilometers the asphalt is nice and smooth, so we can keep going. It is not busy but the cars do drive fast. Around noon we are in Osno Lubuskie in front of the stately town hall. We walk inside and speak to a lady who speaks good English and calls her colleagues, the mayor has a vacancy. Together we walk to the tree bike parked in front of the town hall and hand out some birthday trees. We exchange contact information, take pictures and get the address of the elementary school where we also want to hand out birthday trees. Arriving at the school, the headmistress gets excited by our story, partly because we meet a Dutch father who speaks Polish. She would like a group of children to be photographed with the trees. Fine. Nice for the socials. We have a coffee in the village and continue cycling. It is still a long way to Koryta, and actually we want to go a little further because our accommodation is in Kosobudz. On the way there we cycle through the forest on unpaved paths. And then it happens. A flat front tire. A thorn through the outer and inner tube. Ai. What now? We call Daan and Sanne and hope that a tire repair kit has arrived. And luckily it is there. And even a pump that works on the car is there. Absolutely great. How else do you repair a tire in the forest? I don’t know, the whole wheel off and off to the bike shop? Anyway, an hour later the tire is airy again and we can continue. We are very happy. And even though it turns out the tire is deflating very slowly and will have to be repaired tomorrow, for now we can continue. For part of the way we drive along a provincial road with a sort of emergency lane where the trucks drive fast past. Must be weird for them too to see a tree cycling it seems to me. It is past seven when, after cycling more than eighty kilometers today, we reach Kosobudz. We spend the night in a kind of simple but fine hotel and we eat what’s on the plate, simple and fine. It was another busy day with at least some nice new contacts in Osno Lubuskie.
