Monday, April 21 – Neuhaus – Glückstadt (39 km)

After Easter breakfast, as the sky slowly lightens and it has stopped raining, we say goodbye to Vincent and Liesbeth who are leaving for Woerden again in their E-camper. We (Daan, Linda, Yka, Marije and I) cycle north where we cross the lock into the polder. Nordkehdingen I think it is called with the villages of Balje and Freiburg. What a space, what a feeling of freedom, no one present and fortunately no headwind today. At Wischhafen we board the ferry to be ferried to Glückstadt. Our cars also go along. Lots of spectators and nice conversations on the ferry. And we hand out little trees and take pictures of the happy faces. When we are the last to cycle off the ferry we are waved goodbye by the staff. The long line of waiting cars saw us arrive and many pictures were taken. We should cycle back and forth here all day that gives a lot of free publicity. We cycled, without thinking and incorrectly, about 8 km following the komoot route towards Itzehoe. In fact we only have to cycle three kilometers to our accommodation in Glückstadt. So we just cycled on. I only find out when the battery is empty. We park the Boomfiets and the bikes at someone’s house and Richard comes to pick us up. Half an hour before that we pass a house where a lady is working in her garden. She asks us to address her husband (Jo) in Dutch. A little later we sit together in the garden with a cup of coffee and sunshine. They tell us that a nuclear power plant is being decommissioned nearby and that this will take 20 years. And that there are few houses available as a result. He also shows his free work as a graphic artist, beautiful pencil drawings. What a coincidence we are reaping again here! Sanne teaches a digital yoga class, and we cook together in our shelter. Another friend of Yka drops by on his way to Esbjerk in Denmark. We rummage around some more, emails, socials, etc. and fall asleep almost by ourselves.
