Letovice

Day 40 - 50 km

Lanskroun - Letovice

Around eleven o’clock we step into the town hall that stands quite in the middle of the square in Lanskroun. 10,000 inhabitants have this municipality. The lady from the tourist office, who speaks English well, Jitka Turko, speaks to us and calls the mayor, after about half an hour we walk into mayor Radim Vetchy. Jirka translates my story and soon he links it to a project they are working on now, and of which he proudly shows the drawings, namely a “crown” of groves around the city. And how nice would it be to link that to birthday trees? How wonderful! This, of course, makes Lanskroun an instant champion of birthday forests 2025. What a coincidence we are reaping here. Everyone is excited. If we link this to an education project for schools, the planned groves will also belong to the residents. And that layer was still missing. Top. We can soon post this on the website as a wonderful example for other communities. So this is what it’s all about. Linking interests that will create something very special that will inspire others. We cycle out of Lanskroun and imagine a birthday forest growing here soon. I am absolutely thrilled. We have to pass tilted under a low overpass, which is not easy, but then comes the real challenge, a semi-paved path of more than 10% incline. We almost slide back, Daan has to help push a few times and we just barely make it. We then deviate slightly from the route so as not to encounter another “forest path,” otherwise we won’t reach our intended destination, Letovice. Today we reach the 1,500 kilometer point on our route! The road does vary a lot, busy provincial roads and rustic roads. Many trains today as we appear to be following a railroad line. Just before Letovice the batteries are empty and we park the tree bike in Skrchov, very coincidentally with the mayor of the village of 130 inhabitants, Mr. M. Kubis, talk about reaping coincidence. Sanne picks us up and we ride to Louka, a small hamlet somewhere lost in the landscape ten kilometers from Letovice. What peace and quiet here. Still, we have to pick up the E-bus and trailer. Daan and I get into the car. There we go again. It is also a rest on the day. Floating in our own thoughts through the undulating landscape slowly falling into twilight. Around 10:30 we are back, it is dark with a clear starry sky. Dinner is on the table, ramen soup from Sanne, delicious. We sleep well on it. Tomorrow a break day, well sort of.
