With the tree bike I cycle with Yka and Sanne around ten o’clock from our residence through the center of Alkmaar to Inholland where we get to tell our story to about twenty students. On the way there, we buy the Noord-Hollands-Dagblad which has a full-page article about us with a beautiful photo. We notice that people have read it, they recognize us and we hand out some little trees. At Inholland we meet Karel and Kim who were also there in Nova Gorica. My story with the videos seems to enter the students, it touches them. Partly because in my presentation I also tell them what my personal motivations and questions are. We make a group photo in front of the main entrance and the students cycle along in the rain for about an hour towards Broek op Langedijk. Too bad about the rain but now they notice that that too is part of such a trip. It is what it is, moving along, it gets dry again. We say goodbye to the students and cycle on to Oudkarspel. There Leo and Vera, who are cycling with us again today, treat us to lunch in ‘De Knip’. Nice inside while it rains outside. When it is dry again around three o’clock, we cycle via Waarland and ‘t Veld to Winkel. Pretty typical North Holland villages, but it’s hard to say exactly why. The reactions of the animals here are the same as in all other countries. Ducks, pigeons, crows and herons fly right up, while swans remain very calm. Also dogs, cats, are scared and skittish, while horses show curiosity and cows and sheep are fine. We see no difference in reactions between the countries. It seems as if the animals also communicate with each other, and either reassure each other, like ‘nothing is wrong’, or warn each other, ‘get out of here this can’t be good’. With lots of wind in our backs we cycle through the North Holland landscape with straight roads and huge windmills in a row, to Middenmeer. There we park the tree bike and the three accompanying bikes at an accounting firm Vera knows. The five of us ride back to Alkmaar where we sleep one more night in our fine Soepp hotel. Vera and Leo bike a little further to take the bus back. In Alkmaar we eat in the vegetarian restaurant below the rooms where we stay. Tasty and close by. We discuss the logistics of moving tomorrow and arriving in Leeuwarden the day after tomorrow. Yka is taken to her car by Richard, she will be there again on Saturday. And Marga will arrive tonight and cycle with us as far as Leeuwarden. Another day. Tomorrow we cycle to Den Oever.
