day 120 - 15 km
Kortrijk - Izegem
Today is mainly devoted to the consultation with the municipality of Kortrijk. Around a quarter past ten Richard and Yka, take Sanne and me to the town hall of Kortrijk. There the tree bike is waiting quietly in the courtyard. We heard that the police have even been approached about it. At eleven o’clock, we are welcomed by Didi who, together with two colleagues, starts a conversation with us about what Kortrijk can learn from Bosk and Circle4Change, or better yet, can learn from our methods. We talk about both projects and where we think they can be an inspiration for Kortrijk. We conclude that it is about thinking around, shifting perspective, taking advantage of opportunities and reading Kortrijk’s uniqueness well. Look for the “perfume” of the city, “la couleur local,” and build on that. Instead of solutions to problems, look much more for connecting concepts that can mobilize many people with a strong imagination and set in motion a positive change, an inspiring energy. With concrete examples, we make it clear. After the consultation, we walk together to the tree bike to cycle to the lunch spot. We still want to give a tree to Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe. And because coincidence does not exist, exactly at that moment the alderman (alderman) of nature, Maxim Veys, comes out. He calls the mayor and moments later we take a picture with the mayor and two aldermen. And that without a prior appointment, absolutely great. We give trees and a forest book, tip the tree and go under the gate. During lunch at the Salie restaurant, we talk further with Didi, Liesbeth, Katrien and Jolle. Among other things, about the opportunities for Kortrijk if the fields of ecology, culture and social domain would cooperate much more. A way of working that may not seem obvious but could yield a lot. Making the impossible come true is also the challenge here. After lunch, we bike together through the train station to some projects that are in preparation. It is clear that every municipality struggles with the same questions, as here with the pressure of parking versus the desire for more trees. We say goodbye and we continue our route towards Izegem with komoot. We enjoy an ice cream along the way in the sunshine and cycle north along small streets and an alternation of houses, small-scale agriculture and businesses. We hand out little trees here and there and cycle into Izegem before we know it. Richard, Yka, Daan and Marga are at the house. Groceries have been done and the bike shop has been visited. Tomorrow we cycle to Bruges, where we are expected around four o’clock. I am curious. Just a few more mails to answer and then it’s done for today.
