day 85 - 40 km
Trino - Chivasso
What a beautiful and busy day it was today. Visited three town halls and especially preparing the repair for the tree bike takes time, and at the same time we covered a beautiful route of about forty kilometers. In half an hour we drove to the center of Trino where we found our tree bike at the town hall in the shade. This is how we started our day after breakfast. With Yka I walk into the town hall and, after some explanation of our project and the giving of a tree and the forest book, we happily receive the details of mayor Daniele Plane. He is on vacation – we will encounter that more often in the coming weeks – and we take a picture by the tree with the lady who kindly speaks to us. We also give her a tree. We bike to the garage that was recommended to us a little past Patrizia’s bar where we found on Saturday that the universal joints have a problem. The garage man is clear: We don’t do bikes here, and yes it has to be replaced. We still think it’s no big deal but at a second garage a little further down the road they say the same thing, and also from Cargo Cycling, who we sent the videos to, we get the same advice: replace in its entirety. Ok, but how? It seems to be specially made so it has to come from the Netherlands, from Cargo Cycling. They will see if they have it in stock, and fortunately they do, and we are lucky again that Vincent and Liesbeth happen to be planning to drive from the Netherlands to us exactly tomorrow. If they can bring it with them, we can schedule Thursday to replace it at a yet-to-be-arranged garage, so that we can go into the Alps on Friday with fresh universal joints. That would be awesome. The young lady at the second garage is absolutely delighted with her little tree, and we hand out little trees at the bar as well. We even get some donations, forty-five euros! It is by now noon when we, Richard, Yka and I, cycle away from Trino towards Chivasso, our final destination for today. The route is beautiful and largely along the water and over a dike through rice fields. These are probably our last rice fields of our trip. The swan flowers bloom beautifully here and the many yellow, red and blue dragonflies accompany us. Unfortunately, the birds are uncomfortable with a passing tree and fly up startled. I understand, it’s also quite strange. So we cycle on to the small town of Verolengo where we ring the bell at the town hall because, like everywhere else, it is closed after noon. A man comes out and we take a picture with him and, of course, give him a tree. There is no one else in the cool town hall and he turns out the details of Mayor Rosanna Giachello. Quite right. It’s about fifteen more kilometers to Chivasso, where we cycle with a warm breeze. We do some shopping at the beginning of town and ride on to the center where, after some deliberation, we are allowed to park the tree bike at the town hall on the service side. That part goes into lockdown in the evening, all right. The man we speak to is named Gianluca and appears to be in charge of all the streets and parks. Tomorrow he will introduce me to the mayor and then to some colleagues. The mayor will be there tomorrow between 8:30 and 9. We agree to be there as well. From the center of Chivasso, we drive to our house in fifteen minutes. There we take care of all our daily chores, have a nice dinner outside and check the best location to repair the tree bike on Thursday. Tomorrow is a non-cycling day and on Wednesday we cycle to Avigliana, sixty kilometers from Chivasso. We’ll see tomorrow which garage is best for repairing our tree bike. Good night.
di July 29 - day 86
At eight o’clock, on our non-cycling day, I ride with Daan in twenty minutes to the town hall in the historic center of Chivasso. Security takes us through the back corridor of the old monastery to the mayor’s room. Probably Gianluca announced us, because we are warmly received by mayor Claudio Castello, and there are suddenly seven people standing around us as I explain our story in my best Italian and give the mayor a forest book and tree. They respond enthusiastically and want to join Circle4Change. Top. We walk down for a photo at the tree bike and wait a while for a shovel to plant the tree in the courtyard. Meanwhile, Gianluca also arrives, and the alderman (assessore) of green and environment, Fabrizio Debernardi, is also there. Together with the mayor, I plant the Carpino (Hornbeam) and Daan takes the photos. With Fabrizio and Daan we walk through the town and drink coffee. Gianluca joins us for a short excursion along the Po River. Thus we hear nice stories about the history of the town that now has some twenty-six thousand inhabitants. About “Canale Cavour,” for example, which starts here in Chivasso with the water from the Po, is eighty-five kilometers long and runs to Milan, and was built in three years from 1863 to 1866 to irrigate the rice fields through which we have cycled in recent weeks. So that’s how the water system works! And the story about the eighty-acre Po Park they are building between the Po River and Chivasso, much of which is already finished. And the story about the municipality planting new trees in public areas and having volunteers do the maintenance. Perhaps a good model as an example for other municipalities on the circle line. Talking like this, we walk through the landscape park along the Po River. When we return an hour and a half later to the tree bike, which is allowed to stay here today, we give the tree fifteen liters of water and drive to the parking lot along the highway where we pick up Sanne who has arrived by bus from Milan. Together we drive back to our house. The afternoon flies by with nothing and everything, as it does on a non-cycling day. Vera and Leo, friends of Daan, came by spontaneously, they were in the neighborhood. Cosy. At the end of the afternoon, Sanne and I drive to Chivasso to do some shopping and we walk through the beautiful old center. Around eight o’clock we all eat outside and toast to Leo’s birthday. A beautiful day that ends with beautiful happy musical notes from Leo. Tomorrow we will cycle again. The garage for Thursday hasn’t worked out yet. Another day tomorrow.
