Zandvoort

day 126 - 45 km

The Hague - Zandvoort

Today is Sanne’s birthday, so she gets to ride along in celebration all day. We have breakfast together at the Rockanje bath hotel and drive both cars to The Hague, start up the tree bike there and cycle to the LVVN ministry, where we lay out the map next to the tree bike on the upper square. Richard and Daan take the cars today. We are warmly welcomed by Ernestine Meijer and Matt Huynink. Also Foppe de Haan is there, Pauline van Dijk with two colleagues from the Province and also Maike van Stiphout, my former companion from DS. We briefly share our findings from our trip and present the question of what Circle4Change can do for the ministry. New stories are needed to bridge the gap between citizens and government, Circle4Change is one such story. We agree to talk further about this soon. We fold up our map again and cycle to the Province House. There we wait in front of the door where the deputy with portfolio nature, Berend Potjes, is meeting. Between meetings, he walks with us to the tree bike, we give him a tree and forest book and take a picture. He read the article in the faithful. Fine. We cycle out of The Hague and into the dunes. Pauline also cycles along for a bit, she is forest broker for the province of South Holland. We are going to investigate how we can help the province to realize Birthday Forests. And then, out of nowhere, a group of students comes up behind us who are meeting an ecologist on the beach and whose supervisor, Krijn I turn out to know. What a coincidence. I tell our story to the students and they cycle in a beautiful long ribbon a piece behind us. The dunes are beautiful at this time of year. In Katwijk aan Zee, Richard and Daan are already waiting and there we have lunch. Thanks to Maike from DS for inviting us. It is still quite a long way through the dune landscape and because we have agreed to meet in Zandvoort at about 4:30 p.m. we keep going, while also handing out little trees. When we arrive at the agreed location in Zandvoort, we are greeted with applause. They have organized a kind of green market and our card has already been put on the ground by Richard and Daan. Alderman Jan-Jaap invites me to tell something about the project. Using the map makes it very easy. A mixture of small anecdotes and the underlying story. We talk a bit and again the reactions are very enthusiastic. Li-An is also there who is working hard for drinkable rivers, a wonderful project. Sanne, Jorn and Richard are already driving to Adam, because that is where we will spend the night. We take the tree bike with us. We eat with a view of the sea. And before listening to my presentation, we look at the tree bike together and take a group photo with the Rotary people present. My story comes in, they are touched and that is very nice. We talk about what we want in terms of media coverage and additional funding. And some tips for that come in. It is quarter to ten when we drive toward Amsterdam. Tired and satisfied, I sleep for one night in my own home. A beautiful rich day it was again. Tomorrow we cycle via Castricum to Alkmaar.
