Scheveningen

day 125 - 60 km

Rockanje - Scheveningen/The Hague

A day full of contrasts today. Before we leave from the Badhotel in Rockanje we make sure Fred from Schiedam and the Badhotel get the promised tree bikes. Because there are three of us today, the weather is beautiful and it is nice to have someone riding along with the tree bike, we book another night here, so we can leave the trailer and e-camper today. Tonight Daan will be there again and then tomorrow we will take everything to The Hague, ending up in Zandvoort at the end of the afternoon. It is around eleven o’clock when we leave Rockanje with the tree bike and Richard on the bike, Sanne drives the follow car with batteries. The route is very varied, small villages and big cities, rural and urban, rivers with big ships and ditches with coots, huge industrial areas and artisanal bakeries, highways and bike paths, even people’s reactions seem to have more contrast today, super enthusiastic but also amazed-unlike. There is a lot of wind today. Via Tinte and historic Brielle, we cross over several bridges after Rozenburg and then take the ferry to Maasluis. There we have a cup of coffee and Sanne joins us again. Then it’s ten kilometers off the wind along the river towards Hoek van Holland. We should have droned this, but the car cannot get here easily. We cycle on. From Hoek van Holland it is along the coast through the dunes via Monster towards Scheveningen. It is over twenty-five degrees and it seems like everyone in Holland wants to be at the beach this probably last hot summer day. At every beach entrance we pass every few hundred meters it is a huge crowd, the parking lots are crowded. We have lunch just outside a parking lot near ‘s-Gravenzande. Then we continue through the dunes, which Richard captures with the drone. The wind continues to be strong and every now and then a tree blows off the tree bike. It is around five o’clock when we enter Scheveningen and The Hague. What a rush. We have to get used to the busy city again. We park the tree bike near the Malieveld and the Provinciehuis, so that tomorrow morning we can cycle from here to the LVVN ministry where we have arranged to meet at eleven. While yesterday was a day of many fascinating encounters, today was very limited, we did hand out some tree bicycles but did not make many new contacts. Because it is Sunday perhaps? It’s hard to say. We drive to the harbor of Scheveningen to eat at fish restaurant Simonis. And here too it is busy. We are glad when we are back in the car to drive back to Rockanje. We notice that these are the last days. We are tired and have to keep a close eye on supporting each other. Because it is logical that miscommunication and sometimes even irritation are lurking when the necessary focus is lacking, which is understandable after five months. This too is part of the job, it is also quite a task, with a small team to get this done. Daan is back and tomorrow we leave Rockanje to arrive in Zandvoort via The Hague. We go to bed on time. Another busy day tomorrow.
