Rockanje

day 125 - 51 km

Burgh-Haamstede - Rockanje

Today Circle4Change has a whole page in the first section of Trouw. And I am really happy about that, partly because Orkun, the journalist, summarized it very well. A wonderful blending of events and ambitions. Today was the day of exploiting chance. When we drive from Rockanje to Burgh-Haamstede and find out on arrival, around noon, that Sanne has forgotten the bike key, all three of us are equally annoyed. Because it means driving back to Rockanje, which will take an extra hour and a half. Very annoying, also because Richard and I did not think about it. Super stupid. We miss Daan, the man with the keys. But it turns out to be golden! Coincidence enforces it. In fact, by forgetting the bike key, a number of potential contacts were made today that might be very important. Richard and Sanne ride back and I start today’s stage alone. We agree to meet at the start of the Brouwersdam, just under fifteen kilometers. I cycle through the center of Burgh-Haamstede and stop at a terrace after enthusiastic responses. This way I get into conversation with Fred, a tree knight from Schiedam and with Ronald who is at home in crowdfunding and financing projects with a social interest. The route is beautiful through the dunes, past Renesse to the foot of the Brouwersdam. The many cyclists respond super enthusiastically, well, who has seen a tree cycling through the dunes before? Several people also recognize the tree bike from Omroep Zeeland, radio or TV, and even from the article published this morning in Trouw. In short, it feels like a warm bath to cycle through the dunes with the tree bike. Even though there are some very steep hills that I really shouldn’t take alone. I succeeded and it is around three o’clock when Richard and Sanne arrive. After a short lunch, I cycle up the Brouwersdam with Sanne. Richard is taking drone shots. We cycle along the beautiful inner dune edge of Goeree and again meet fascinating people there, including a ninety-six-year-old man who is back with his family for an afternoon in this area where he has developed a lot over the course of his life. We cycle on and just before the port of Stellendam, before crossing the Haringvliet locks, we meet a German-Swiss couple who are very interested, after chatting for a while it turns out that he, named Phillip, has ‘living for change’ as his motto and has developed many important international projects and initiatives. How wonderful to meet these people here on the coast of Zeeland. And all because Sanne forgot her bike key this morning. Should she do it more often! We take another drone shot at the port of Stellendam and cycle across the Haringvliet locks. It’s nice and quiet now, Saturday evening around six o’clock. From here it’s a few more kilometers to Rockanje where we park the tree bike at the Badhotel next to the back entrance. There we meet a lady with her daughter whom we give two little trees, they really want to promote our project on linkedin and TikTok. How nice. Sanne makes the contact. We drink a beer, satisfied with harvesting so many coincidences today, and have dinner at the hotel. Still fifty kilometers again today and about thirty trees handed out. Just before dinner, Fred the tree knight from Schiedam calls. I have promised him some trees for his project and he will pick them up tomorrow morning. And I also promised the Badhotel to leave behind some trees that they can hand out to their guests who participate in the Hotels-for-Trees action, a tree is planted if you don’t have your room cleaned. A beautiful sunny Saturday with lots of coincidences, and that was it.
