day 123 - 45 km
Bruges - Zoutelande
So glad the boom bike is working again, now we can stay on schedule and cycle to Zoutelande today. We cross the border into the Netherlands. At the Damse-Vaart on the north side of Bruges we gather, also Katia and Piet from Ghent, whom we know from the ‘Col de la Madelaine’ and their friend Dirk cycle along. At ten o’clock Omroep Zeeland – radio calls for a short interview. We cycle about twenty kilometers along the Damse Vaart until we reach the Belgian-Dutch border. We take a nice border photo with the team. We are back in the Netherlands. It feels crazy and also nice. The man from Omroep Zeeland TV is waiting for us at the border to make recordings. In Sluis, which is two kilometers further into the Netherlands, we do the interview. We cycle from Sluis to Cadzand-Bad. And just past it, Daan Zuijderwijk, Maaike and their three children are waiting for us, they are cycling with us for two days on beautiful recumbent bicycles. They themselves have been cycling through Europe for much longer. Wonderful. The route from Cadzand to Breskens through the dunes is really beautiful. The wind in the back. What a delight these free-lane bike paths in the Netherlands. The tree bike sees the North Sea for the first time. And for me, too, it has been a while since I saw the North Sea. We are a nice parade with the five complementary recumbents. When we arrive at the port of Breskens I have a short interview in the radio-Optimist. Jan and Jim are already waiting with the car ambulance. With it the tree bike is driven through the tunnel from Terneuzen to Vlissingen, because we cannot take the bike ferry. Well lashed and packed we drive to Terneuzen and quietly through the tunnel. With Sanne riding behind the tree bike. It goes fine. It is 5:30 when we arrive at Vlissingen harbor, where our cyclists are waiting for us. The journalist from Trouw and a photographer are also there. We do the interview by phone while riding. We got back on our bikes in the direction of Zoutelande, today’s destination. Through the dunes and through the forest with many low branches, very beautiful but not nice for the tree bike. About ten kilometers. When we arrive at the church in Zoutelande, Foppe and Daniele are already there. Someone from the historical tells about the “Willibrord Well” from 690. Christine of the Rotary tells me that she embraces the project and wants to give it further attention. And I tell something about our arrival in the Netherlands and how special it is what we have done. We raise our glasses and toast our great team! ‘Crazy and genius’ is what our team is laughingly called. The tree bike stays here even though it is a bit windy. We drive to Koudekerke where we stay for one night. We move in and there is cooking. After dinner we talk about the coming days and how we are going to do the logistics of handling. A nice puzzle. The beginning has been made. Continuing tomorrow.
