Kortrijk

day 119 - 24 km

Linselles - Kortrijk

We bike a short stage on this drizzly Sunday, from Linselles in France to Kortrijk in Belgium. We start just after noon, well wrapped up against the rain, to get used to autumn. Sanne follows with the e-camper. Richard has stayed at home because he will pick up Daan, Marga and Yka in Zeeland in the early evening. This morning the battery of the black car turned out to be empty. Probably something was left on unintentionally. With the Belgian roadside assistance, Richard manages to solve it in consultation with Daan. From Linselles I cycle via Halluin and Wevelgem to Kortrijk. It is quiet on the road. At Halluin we pass the border unnoticed, but I haven’t seen a sign anywhere. So unfortunately no border photo this time. It is striking that from the beginning of Wevelgem to Kortrijk, some ten kilometers anyway, we see no more landscape. All roads are filled with a fascinating mix of houses and businesses. They do have bike lanes again, which is very pleasant for safety, especially in the rain. As we enter Kortrijk, it clears up. We drive to the Raemdonck Park where we meet Jolle Desloover of ‘Durf2030’ with whom I have been in contact for a year. Today is the last day of his five-day workshop, an exchange with young people from Greece. The conclusion is a picnic in the park. It looks cozy when we arrive by bicycle with the tree bike. We tell our story to those interested and hand out almost all of the twenty little trees left on the tree bike. We catch up with Jolle and of course I emphasize that Circle4Change can be a huge opportunity for Kortrijk. Tomorrow morning we have a consultation with the green department of the municipality, to which we have been invited, then I will give it attention again. I am curious what ambitions there are here and also about the collaboration between culture, ecology and the social domain, because that is where the opportunities lie. The city seems to me to be reasonably green and very bicycle-friendly. Kortrijk resembles Leeuwarden in scale and atmosphere, as far as I can tell so quickly. We say goodbye to Jolle and cycle the tree bike to the town hall in the center. There we are allowed to park the tree bike in the courtyard, next to Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe’s official car. Sanne drives us back to Izegem in just under half an hour. Absolutely fine. We are back at a good six o’clock. We eat something and do some administrative things. And before we know it Richard returns with Daan, Marga and Yka. Very nice that they are back. We have a drink and go to sleep.
