day 116 - 46 km
Rethonvillers - Lesboeufs
We start slowly today, after all we are about twenty kilometers ahead of schedule and it is cloudy and a little rainy, this afternoon it will be dry again and the sun will come out. So this morning we do our emails, route and socials. It is eleven o’clock when we drive from Mont-Saint-Eloi to Rethonvillers in a rainstorm. Well timed, when we arrive it is dry again. Richard cycles with us and Sanne drives the car. After three kilometers along a provincial road where trucks drive by at high speed we arrive in Nesle. Here I walk into the Mairie, tell about our project, give a tree, a forest book and the leaflets, and of course we take a picture by the tree bike. The mayor Frederic Demule is not there but it is passed on to him. Another contact. From Nesle we cycle through the open agricultural area until we come up against the Somme River. From Saint-Christ-Briost to Cléry-sur-Somme we follow the canal on the south side of the Somme. Halfway there is Péronne, today’s actual final destination, where we have coffee by two o’clock. As we continue cycling along the canal, boaters raise their hands smiling, they have seen this before, a cycling tree. Everywhere in the villages along the Somme you see reminders of the First World War that also took place here. An emotionally charged area. I find it hard to imagine what happened here. What a strange species man is. We have lunch on the banks of the canal and along the way, wherever possible, we hand out a tree to surprised but grateful and happy people. We head back into the gently rolling farmland, climbing and descending. Everywhere tractors with large machines are working the land, the season is coming to an end, autumn is setting in. In a village, we stop by an elderly man picking roses in his garden. He invites us to have a drink. It is always special to get a glimpse into people’s homes. Also here. Nice and tidy, is the best summary. It is already around six and we cycle on to the village of Lesboeufs. There we park the tree bike near the church and ride back to our accommodation in Mont-Saint-Eloi. We have a nice dinner and over the phone we hear from Daan that his examinations have turned out well. Very nice. Sunday he connects again. All great. Good night.
