Joigny

day 108 - 51 km

Vincelles - Joigny

It rained heavily last night. The trees will be very happy. And as it looks, it will continue to rain today as well. We finally leave Eric and Elsje’s place around eleven o’clock, having packed and cleaned up everything. The whole family waves us goodbye. What a great stay it was here. We drive both cars to Vincelles where the tree bike is. It is still raining and I dress well. Because Richard drives the bus and Daan drives the car with trailer I cycle alone today. And of course that has both advantages and disadvantages. It is unsociable but also has something special, you experience the landscape much more intensely when you cycle alone. Today it seems as if I am continuously cycling through a cloud. The rain is everywhere. Not hard but still. Because it is raining, there are few people on the streets. After about fifteen kilometers I cycle into the center of Auxerre, a beautiful historic town. At the town hall I walk in in my rain gear to drop off a tree for the mayor, Crescent Marault. It turns out he is not there, but I am warmly welcomed by the lady from the communications department. She tells me that Auxerre wants to plant a thousand trees in the city and has already started, if I understood correctly. We take a picture in front of the Hotel de Ville and then I continue. In the village of Perrigny, just outside Auxerre, I hand out some more trees to enthusiastic people at the village pub. The landscape begins to change. Fewer forests and it becomes a bit more large-scale. More the landscape of northern France and less of the Morvan. When we arrive in Joigny around five o’clock, I look for the town hall to park the tree bike there. Two ladies are just walking out and I tell them what we are doing and that I would like to give a tree bike to the mayor. A moment later I am inside and the mayor, Nicolas Soret, is standing in front of me. I tell our story and he receives two little trees and the forest book. We can park the tree bike in the courtyard. Very nice. Richard and Daan have also arrived; they have already done some shopping for tonight. We drive with both cars to our accommodation in Chuelles, in the forest, a good half hour drive from Joigny. Our host Sébastiaan gives us a friendly welcome. We cook dinner and then it is soon time for bed. Tomorrow we leave a little later so we can take care of some administrative things and mails, and because we end up in Sens with the tree bike we can immediately pick up Sanne who arrives by train around five tomorrow afternoon. How smoothly it all runs again.
