day 96 - 71 km
Albertville - Rumilly
What trees are here in this part of France. Not much more needs to be added it seems to me. In the valleys the trees are even advancing, the homeowner Christel in Saint-Colomban-des-Villards told me a few days ago, because small-scale farming is no longer profitable here. Here we don’t need to plant additional trees, and yet people are happy when they get a tree. We are touching something else anyway, and that’s nice. And let’s be honest, the trees are first and foremost a means of telling our story, and besides that, it’s great that the five thousand trees we are handing out together form the beginning of a gesamtkunstwerk. It is quarter past nine when, having packed everything, we drive away from Ameyzieu-Talissieu to drive to Albertville. It’s another moving day today. It’s quite a stretch, but in August it’s vacation time and there is little in the way of good affordable accommodation. Just a few extra miles then. It is eleven o’clock when we walk into Albertville’s stately town hall. At the mayor’s office they are happy with the little tree and the forest book. When we get outside, pictures are already being taken by the communications department. Very nice. Richard bikes with us today, Daan has the follow car and Sanne goes straight to the next location. We cycle along the river that flows through Albertville and it goes very well until after nine kilometers Richard calls for us to stop. It turns out a brake pad has failed. You wouldn’t believe it but less than five hundred meters further on we find garage Ugine Automobile who want to help us, after lunch. We buy ourselves a sandwich and when it’s our turn Noa helps us replace the brake pads. On the left side, the right is still ok. And also the brake pads of the front wheel are replaced. They were in need of it. Within an hour we are done and we don’t have to pay. Great right? What luck again. We give them two little trees and ride on happily. From Ugine it is actually one continuous wide bike path all the way to Annecy, thirty kilometers long. A wonderful example for the Circle4Change route. A beautiful route that, the closer we get to Annecy, gets busier and busier with tourist cyclists. Lake Annecy also presents itself. Beautiful. I can understand why this is and favorite vacation destination. It is around 4:30 when we cycle into Annecy, what a crowd. We would like to make it to Rumilly today, but that is quite a distance, including a climb, as we leave Annecy. It is more than thirty degrees and together with the climbing it is quite tough. Fortunately, the beautiful scenery and the positive reactions we receive throughout the day do a lot of good. You notice that we are coming from the high mountains into the low mountains, the mountains become hills and the views become longer. The small villages, mostly hamlets, are pleasantly cluttered. People are working, you can feel it. And so we slowly descend again to four hundred meters, the altitude at which Rumilly lies. It is a quarter to eight when we arrive in the center, it is quiet for a Friday evening. Well, it is vacation time, says the bartender of Bar-74 opposite the town hall where we park the tree bike. Is Annecy just busy because of the vacations, here it is quieter. There is no Lac de Annecy here. That’s why. We pick up the trailer we parked here this morning, a two-minute drive from downtown, and drive to our new location, where Sanne has already prepared dinner. What a day. You don’t make something like this up. But it just happens to us. Tomorrow another big climb in my opinion, over a thousand meters. We’ll wait and see.
