Avigliana

day 87 - 68 km

Chivasso - Avigliana

Moving to the next location is always quite an operation. And yet it is only just nine o’clock when we descend from our house to the town hall of Chivasso, where the tree bike is located. There, as agreed, we leave behind about thirty little trees that we can no longer give out because they have lost too many leaves. We decide, before we start cycling, to put out the big map on the square and hand out trees, partly because there is a big market today. We wrestle the tree bike through the crowd and to the accompaniment of a violin we hand out the trees and leaflets in the little square in front of the big church with its beautifully decorated facade. It is always difficult to start it up, to claim the space, especially when it is crowded, but afterwards the result is extra nice. Even now, within three quarters of an hour all twenty-five little trees were handed out and a multitude of leaflets. What a positive response, what a good action. It also makes us happy. We will send the pictures of it to the mayor and journalist. It is already almost noon when we cycle away, Sanne, Daan, Vera and I. Richard, Yka and Leo are driving the cars. The route in this area is much along provincial roads and that does not cycle pleasantly, also we cycle remarkably often wrong today because my internet does not work properly, something with data limit. In short, the route is quite messy today. We do have a nice lunch together on the shoulder of the road while the planes taking off from Turin make a lot of noise around the corner. In Volpiano, where we pass, we stop by the town hall and also take a photo and exchange addresses and give a tree and the forest book. Already more than twenty municipalities in Italy we have spoken to briefly and are enthusiastic. As we continue cycling we notice how the mountains are now really getting very close, they seem to want to close in on us. And even the first small inclines have to be taken, when going up I have to switch the tree bike back to “snail mode. It is around six o’clock when we enter Avigliana, the end point for today. We have arranged to meet in the historic center, which turns out to be a lot higher up, so it’s a big climb. First I look for a suitable garage to replace the universal joint that Vincent and Liesbeth will bring from the Netherlands this evening. I find two possible garages. Up in time tomorrow morning to arrange that on the spot. I hear from Sanne how impossible the climb to the historic center is, especially with a bicycle in hand. When I get there everyone is already there, our team and Vera and Leo. How good a beer is after such a climb. Leo and Vera love our project and surprise us by announcing that they are going to make a nice donation to Circle4Change. How nice. Since Vincent and Liesbeth will also arrive soon from the Netherlands, we decide to have something to eat on the square and then go to our new accommodation in Susa, which is still half an hour away. Coincidence brings us into Ciclocucina, the cycling restaurant, who think our cycling project is a great story. It is very cozy together, even though we are tired. We toast to the Alps that we can now almost touch. After parking the bikes, watering the tree bike and taking out the batteries, we drive in the dark to our new location. It is around 11:30 when we arrive there. A fine place with a large garden, where in addition to our camper and car with trailer, the E-campers of Leo-Vera and Vincent-Liesbeth can also be parked. We drink another tea and go flat. It has been a long day. I hope it will work tomorrow with the universal joints. First things first, let’s get some sleep.

do 31 july - day 87

With Daan, I drive towards Avigliana a little after eight to our tree bike to have the universal joints replaced. With the tree bike first to ‘Marzano Moters’ where I passed by last night on my way to the historical city center. For more than an hour and a half we try all sorts of things but eventually have to conclude that it won’t work. We can’t get the tree high enough to get under it properly to replace the universal joints. With Marzano I drive to another garage where they might have a “pit,” then it should work. There three of them call all the garages in the area at once, but unfortunately it doesn’t work, either there is no capacity or the required clearance is not there. Too bad, but now what? We drive back and say goodbye to Marzano with a tree. He is really sorry that he can’t help and also doesn’t want to be compensated for his time. After we cycle away we ponder, what now? Frankly, it looks bleak. And we are hungry, we haven’t had breakfast yet this morning. It is almost noon and yet we ride first to our last ‘straw’, garage ‘Dielle Car Tech’ which I had called two days ago but indicated they had no space. No harm done. With the tree bike to the industrial area, Daan follows with the car. We park the bike in front of the garage and the three young men who seem to run the garage together come curiously to see what is going on. I tell our story and that they are our only remaining hope. Within a minute they are under the tree bike and two minutes later it is clear. They are going to do this job for us. From three o’clock this afternoon they can start working on it. Luck seems to be falling to us again. How nice. We drive to the old center to eat a sandwich. I write yesterday’s report on my laptop and also walk into the town hall, which is next door. An enthusiastic response to our story and the forest book. Another municipality added to the C4C family. It is a little after three when we walk into ‘Dielle Car Tech’ again. And then the ‘operation’ begins. Literally. It really looks like an intensive-hours-long operation in the intensive-care unit. The tools, the focus, the watching, deliberating, weighing and expert handling. The tree bike, the patient in this one, seems to be under anesthesia and doesn’t give a hoot. Just under three hours the operation lasts, and Daan and watch. The ‘Cargo Cycling’ specialists from the Netherlands also watch tensely via video call. The operation goes smoothly and according to plan. And around six o’clock everything is back in place, no parts are left over and the tree bike with the new universal joints rides much better than before the operation. How happy we are. It worked. We could not have dreamed this at lunchtime. The guys from ‘Dielle Car tech’ are also happy and I immediately send them the pictures I took of the ‘operation’. Our own Circle4Change team and the Cargo-Cycling team are also super happy. We can go further into the Alps! We take the tree bike to the place where we parked the bikes last night in Avigliana, and from there drive back to Susa in half an hour, to our accommodation. Tired and satisfied. When we get there, Richard and Yka are waiting for us. And the delicious food is already waiting for us. What a fine arrival. Everyone has sympathized today. According to the route preparation we will cross the border into France tomorrow, and we will start the first climb. Up quite a bit already. Exciting right?
