day 82 - 50 km
Rea - Pieve del Cairo
From our residence we drive to Rea where we arrive at our tree bike around ten o’clock. And, how coincidental, in front of the town hall which is closed, we still meet mayor Claudio Segni who had to be inside for a moment and already wants to get back into his car. We give him a tree and the forest book and exchange addresses. Totally great. Richard and Yka bike with us today, Daan follows with the batteries in the car. Again today we follow the Po River. What strikes us as we cycle along the dike is that in addition to corn and soy, a lot of rice is grown here. The bright green color lights up even more when the sun shines on it. After about ten kilometers we arrive in Sommo, a small town of one and a half thousand inhabitants, which is again north of the river. We step into the town hall and almost immediately meet the mayor, Giovanna Paola Ferrari, on the second floor. She thinks it’s a great project and enthusiastically walks down with us for a photo at the tree bike. A tree and forest book are of course not missing and then we continue our route. Around twenty kilometers, it’s time for a cup of coffee, but unfortunately we can’t compliment the good Italian coffee here. While we pause, I check the tree bike to see if maybe the basic tilt construction has gotten slack over time because there is a new sound in the bike that we can’t bring home. But it turns out it’s not. So we have further searching to do. We cycle on and arrive in the town of “Sannazzaro de Burgondi” where we enter the town hall through the back and meet a cleaning lady who tells us that the town hall is closed, it is already around four o’clock, but she does fetch someone to speak to us. In the end, we hand out a tree to five people and the three cleaning ladies are also photographed very happy with a tree. It was very nice to give them a tree as well. We exchanged addresses and, as usual, gave them the book of trees that they would give to the mayor, Roberto Zucca. Three town halls today, all the way. Another twelve kilometers or so to the finish in “Pieve del Cairo,” part of which is along a mile-long straight road whose asphalt is not equally good everywhere. The reactions of the people we meet are also enthusiastic here, although I must confess that we also regularly see surprised faces. Maybe people are in a bit of a hurry here, who knows? In “Pieve del Cairo,” on the square where the town hall stands, we hand out a few more trees and park the tree bike at the edge of the square. On the way back to our lodging we do some shopping and by six o’clock we drive into our garden. Nice and early today. The evening flies by with cooking and eating, washing and watering trees, adjusting the route, writing a report and answering emails. Tomorrow is already Saturday, we are getting closer and closer to the Alps, Venice feels really far away.
