Day 76 - 27 km
Stradella - Mantua
We are in a bit of a hurry this morning because we find out that fixing the brake has to be done before noon because otherwise the bike shops will be closed and we will have to wait at least until Monday. So we get the spare materials from the bus, and by car, via the trailer we take with us, we drive to the cemetery of Stradelle, where the tree bike is. From here, with fresh trees on the tree bike, we bike to the bike store in north Mantua, which is about forty minutes by bike. There the message is very clear: you shouldn’t be here, we can’t do anything with the hydraulics. Fortunately, they tip us off to a bike shop three kilometers away. We get there at a brisk pace and at a quarter to twelve we are in front of the rolling door that closes at noon on Saturdays. The man, Andrea Castelli, is extremely friendly and helpful. The wheel comes off and it turns out to be the same problem as before. Part of the brake pad has fallen out and then the brake fluid starts leaking and the pressure drops. It is solved by placing extra rings so that the pad can no longer fall out. Sanne meanwhile does the socials. Around one o’clock we say goodbye after giving a tree and a generous donation. We are super happy that it is solved on this Saturday morning, and this time well in my opinion! We cycle through Mantova town to the long dam over the lake where we want to take drone shots of cycling into town. I cycle up and down a few times and it gives nice images. We have a simple lunch by the water, next to the dam. It is clammy hot. Then into the old town to lay out the map and hand out trees and leaflets. It really is a very beautiful old town. Many people turn out to be tourists and understandably cannot take a tree with them. They do respond enthusiastically to our initiative, which is nice. It is around 4:30 when we decide to stop cycling today, which was our intention. A quiet Saturday evening is nice sometimes. Richard and Daan return the car to the garage and I cycle with Sanne past last night’s restaurant to give Antonella Guidi the forest book and two little trees, which she will give to the mayor. Before we walk into town for a beer and some food, we shower off the clammy heat. The beer is delicious and it is super nice to be able to sit back and relax and not have to do anything. Via a Chinese-Thai restaurant we walk back to the hotel. It has been a long time since we said goodnight to each other so early, it’s just about nine o’clock. But it feels good to have a long night. Tomorrow we’ll go for another good stretch of cycling.
