day 73 - 30 km
Mestre - Tombelle
Richard picks up Sjoerd and Nine from Piazza Roma so that we can cycle away from our accommodation in Mestre around ten o’clock. Sjoerd and Nine cycle with us until about three o’clock, then Richard takes them to the airport in Venice. The first seven kilometers, with the tree bike in front, go south to get back on the route. From there we follow the water along which beautiful villas and palazzos with lovely gardens appear. It is striking that the state of maintenance varies quite a bit, some are beautiful and others are totally dilapidated. What a rich area this must have been a hundred years ago. At the stately town hall of Mira we park our bikes and walk inside to tell Mayor Marco Dori our story, unfortunately he is no longer there and we tell a staff member who gives us the address details. Around 1:30 we have covered thirty kilometers and stop in Tombelle where we continue our conversation with a simple lunch in a business park about what we picked up the first half of the Tour and how best to tell the story of Circle4Change. My observation that what we see and what we know are at odds is a good starting point for this. And if we can back this up with stories from the perspective of different voices from nature on our circle line, such as “the bee” in Germany and “the red kite” in Poland, it might work. Placing the facts by voice in time (now, 50 and 100 years ago) can be very helpful in this regard. The infographic at the Biennale, “Calculating Empires,” is a wonderful example and inspiration for this. And then comes the hard part. How do we translate it into a powerful imagination that offers hope and prospects for action? Because just telling people that things are not going well is not my modus operandi. This gives plenty of food for thought in the coming weeks as we cycle toward the Alps. We park the tree bike on our own property in front of the restaurant and ride back to Mestre with Richard, after which Richard takes Sjoerd and Nine to the airport. They were beautiful days together.
