Day 68 - 68 km

Porcenia - Caorle

As Daan and Richard prepare for the bike day, I have a video call with Amsterdam about taking advantage of the momentum created after the Birthday Forest on the A10. This is a unique opportunity to boost the greening of Amsterdam. How beautiful would it be if we had a permanent mobile park forest in Amsterdam whose trees renew every year? A form of deferred planting so to speak, the trees are not waiting at the nursery but in the city. Around 10:30 we leave, it is already nice and warm, Richard bikes along and Daan follows with the car, the bus and trailer remain. In the first town we pass we stop at the town hall. It turns out to be Precenicco and has 1400 inhabitants. We have to make a big detour because we cannot cross the water with the tree bike. After some inquiries we meet Elisa in the street, the enthusiastic alderman of culture, she even comes running. They do a lot about green, water and climate here, according to the other Elisa who compliments the alderman. We give the alderman a Birthday Tree and a Forest Book. We drive into the countryside, it feels polder-like, flat and straight roads. After about twenty kilometers of right-angled turns, we arrive in Gorgo, a village south of Latisana. At a bar we stop for coffee and give a tree to a young lady from Romenia, who is sitting on the terrace with her cousin. We order an Americana, which Richard and Daan think of as coffee but the bartender thinks of as a cocktail of campari and red martini. That chopped a lot for lunch. We strike up a conversation with the man at the bar and he knows the mayor of Latisana, Sette Gianfranco. The town hall is now closed on Friday afternoons. We get the mayor’s address so we can add him to the C4C family and email him. All good. We bike on to Latisana and take the bridge over the Veneto River. Then we slowly descend towards the coast, very flat and rural and there is a strong wind. It could hardly be more Dutch. In a village called San Michele al Tagliamento, we pass an elementary school. Here, too, we give away a tree. It turns out to be a summer school. They are so enthusiastic that we get coffee and want to be photographed with us. In my best Italian, I tell the kids the story of Circle4Change, and we leave six more birthday trees. The two French cyclists who stopped in amazement, Philip and Marie, are also there; it turns out they are cycling part of our route roughly in the opposite direction. What a nice coincidence again. It is half past three and we get hungry. We have to make sandwiches tomorrow, we didn’t get around to it this morning. Along the road at a bar-like place we eat a sandwich, which is good. It turns out to be further than we thought. It is still eighty kilometers to Venice, and we want to arrive there tomorrow afternoon. So at least another twenty or thirty kilometers today. It’s four-thirty. Should be fine. On to Caorle on the coast. A good stretch against the wind, alternating between quiet roads and roads with a lot of traffic. It is six o’clock when we cycle into the busy coastal town. What a different atmosphere all of a sudden, lots of tourism. We wait for half an hour at the ferry which refuses to come. The engine is broken. So a detour, six extra kilometers. Suddenly the weather changes, it’s getting cooler. When we finally cross the long bridge, the thunderstorm approaches quickly and we decide to stop for today and park the tree bike in a quiet street under a big tree. It’s enough for today, it’s eight o’clock and we have covered sixty-eight kilometers. By car we drive back to Porcenia, three quarters of an hour away. When we drive past Latisana again with the beautiful threatening skies, we decide to eat something small here, we won’t have to cook later and I can write this report. It becomes pizza. What a beautiful day it was again, even though it has cooled down considerably and it is raining. That’s good for the tree bike and birthday trees again, we say. Good night.
