day 53 - 55 km

Reichenau - Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein

Around eight o’clock I call Cargo Cycling, the guys from the tree bike. They expect it to be a contact thingy, a connection somewhere that has developed play. The Boomfiets has of course bumped a lot in the past weeks. And that is probably where the bug started. With Richard and Daan we drive to the house of Rup our mechanic in Reichenau where the Boomfiets is. The full battery goes in and to our surprise, it just starts. We change the battery as a test and it still works. Great. But how is this possible? It is Monday so it does it again, yesterday it had Sunday rest, otherwise I cannot explain it. Probably still a contact somewhere that wasn’t right and now it is again. I call Cargo Cycling and we are just going to try it today, up the mountain, despite the risk that we might stall somewhere halfway. Cargo Cycling is going to send some spare materials so we can replace things if necessary. What a great service, very nice. We go up the mountain, twelve kilometers up, from 520 to 1070 meters, 550 meters up. It’s slow, nine kilometers per hour, but it works. We are extremely happy and had not dared to hope. Meanwhile, Sanne and Nanja are visiting mayor Karl Rudischer in Mürzzuschlag and then Helmut Wallner in Spital am Semmering, to whom they enthusiastically tell about our project. Around one o’clock we are all at the top of the mountain at 1,070 meters, where the tree bike has just arrived. What an achievement. Richard and Daan drive the car back to Reichenau to pick up the trailer, stop by the town hall, which turns out to be closed, and get a case of beer as a thank-you for Rup. Sanne and Nanja bike down the mountain with us, via Kapellen to Mürzzuschlag, where we slept last night, a nice route, and from there to Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein, where we get back on the original route. Along the way we hand out some birthday trees. The last fifteen kilometers are quite tough and the tree bike doesn’t feel like it. So we do a test by pulling the tree bike with the car. Let’s see if that works. And yes it works, very nice. With this towing option as backup we can also cross the Alps, it seems to me. Sanne has already driven to the location where we will spend the night, near Passail. When we arrive in Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein, the hostess of the Gasthof where we have a drink turns out to have her birthday exactly today. And so she gets a birthday tree. We are allowed to park the tree bike and trailer on their property and drive to our location in Oberneudorf. Quite a distance, but we stay here for two nights so we cycle there tomorrow with the tree bike from Sankt Kathrein. The food is delicious again and that is good after another long day, but also a very beautiful day.
