Angermunde

Day 24 - 35km

Gerswalde (Ort-Herrenstein) - Joachims-Thal (tree bike in Angermünde)

It is surprisingly chilly today, 12-14 degrees. We’ll just have to put on an extra sweater then. After breakfast Richard and I cycle two kilometers back to Gerswalde where, through Bernd our landlord, we are invited to visit the “Grosse Garten”, a beautiful initiative in the middle of the village on which several superimposed terraces of vegetable gardens have been created and in which many people participate. Marie leads us around and talks enthusiastically about the history of the place. A nice socio-ecological initiative and thus a nice Circle4Change example, it seems to me. Both Marie and Bernd give us some birthday trees which they are happy to plant in their gardens. We leave Gerswalde around eleven o’clock to head for Angermünde, the last stop before entering Poland on Monday. Thirty-five kilometers, a short route today, as it should be after yesterday. The route again alternates between through roads and through the forest, with the paths not everywhere easy for the tree-bike, unpaved or with natural stone cobblestones. Rattle-the-rattle. It’s no different. Around noon Hilbert Makkinga arrives from the Netherlands to bring a new load of birthday trees (700 km). We can hand them out again. On the way in Kerkow, just before Angermünde, we stop at an organic store, where we have coffee and give several people a birthday tree when they ask interestedly what we are doing. These are actually pretty good places to tell our story we notice! We park the tree bike just outside Angersmünde at the fire station, and ride with Sanne in the bus to Joachims-Thal where we have rented a cottage on a camping site, about a 15-minute drive away. When we arrive, Daan and Hilbert have already transferred all four hundred trees to our trailer. We unload and have a belated leftover lunch. With Hilbert I then drive back to Angermünde to inspect our holm oak, also we are going to test the sensor for the moisture measurement and take a measurement. It turns out to be on the dry side and we give it some extra water. According to Hilbert, the tree is doing quite well, especially considering that it has already traveled almost a thousand kilometers. And this species (Holm Oak) won’t start sprouting until it gets warmer, so the new shoots are yet to come. Back at our cottage, we watch the May four Remembrance Day at eight o’clock and hold two minutes of silence. It remains impressive, especially to commemorate that here in Northeast Germany. Sanne has again cooked wonderfully, we eat deliciously, Hilbert also eats with us. We tie some more strings to the cards we will hang in the birthday trees, drink tea, do our daily digital rituals and go to sleep.
