Leeuwarden arrival

day 131 - 60 km

Breezanddijk - Leeuwarden

What a finale, what a day. Waking up to thunderstorms and rain, and hoping it would be dry. After breakfast, the five of us from Den Helder to Breezanddijk. The RWS car is already there. Johan de Boer accompanies us. And there Floris and Rose, Linda, Yka, Marlise, Leo and Vera also arrive, the beginning of the growing peloton today. The weather has cleared up, an alternation of sun, wind and beautiful threatening clouds. We get off the wind nicely on the new bike path on the Wadden Sea side of the Afsluitdijk. Floris and Richard take shots. If we have to wait a while I disappear into a stone, well, we have to keep playing. We arrive at Kornwerderzand, at the fish migration river, for which I devised the Happy Fish experience concept a few years ago. Nice how both projects come together here. We take a picture with the five big happy fish standing in front of the Wadden Center. Vincent, Willem, Simonne and Meile join us. On to Makkum, we are on schedule. We reward the bit against the wind with coffee in Makkum. On via Exmorra to Bolsward where Omroep Fryslan is waiting for us for a short interview. We have lunch together and see on the weather radar that it does not stay dry. That is part of the story. We cycle through the beautiful Frisian landscape with green meadows and small villages. The weather turns, with threatening clouds. Quickly putting on the rain gear, just in time, we ride off and the shower erupts. The bike paths seem narrower today. And we often have to tilt, even with the front wheel up, our Venice method. Otherwise we really can’t get under the low overpasses. At Hillaard, I see family standing around. Jan, Phia, Vincent and Angela, how very nice. They cycle with me to Leeuwarden. The whole route is sixty kilometers today. And the peloton is growing, about forty I estimate. The drone images must be beautiful, dark skies and sunshine at the same time, green meadows, and then such a large group. In my head there is still little room for reflection on such a day, but it still feels a little strange to plant the tree later, we have become friends. How will it feel to be treeless? We enter Leeuwarden via the Zwette. Road diversions, the bridge open and then after five months and five thousand kilometers arriving only half an hour late, that’s pretty clever, isn’t it? Mayor Sybrand Buma agrees, he is used to people waiting for him, now he has to wait for a tree on the back of a bicycle. There is plenty of applause and a happy mood under the Tower, also both children’s mayors are there, Yara and Nora. Briefly some instructions on what we are going to do and we cycle with the tree bike and Sybrand Buma in front to the place where the tree will be planted, in the Prinsentuin a few hundred meters further along the Green Road, close to the line of our circle. Nico and Riemer and some colleagues from the municipality are there to plant the tree. Top. It’s a bit of a puzzle how to get the tree out of the container properly, it’s well anchored. Meanwhile, we lay out our big map and, with everyone around the map, after a warm welcome from Buma and kind words from both children’s mayors, I talk about our experiences and goals. I try to keep it lighthearted with jokes, because I too am tired. Sanne paints the last part of the dotted line. Now we have really come full circle. Also Dominique my twin brother has come, very sweet, and my niece Charlotte. Sjoerd says a few more beautiful words and then our precious Stone Oak ‘Oaky’ is planted. How happy the tree will be to have solid ground under her feet. Will she also be glad to be rid of us? Will she miss our fuss? We don’t know. There are many people, which is very nice. The Leeuwarder Courant is also there and I give another brief interview. Everyone gets a little tree to take home, including the children’s citizens. The card is folded again. The tree bike is placed in Cargo-cycling’s car, the Boat-tours bikes have already been collected. Goes well that clean up, tomorrow the rest, first a drink at the ‘Skeve Toren’. Great that many people are there, Sanne’s family is also there, very cozy. It is almost eight o’clock when we drive to restaurant ‘Wannee’ of NHL-Stenden for dinner. It’s all very tasty and we have a nice chat with Sjoerd. We are happy, satisfied and tired. We eat with the core team: Richard, Yka, Daan, Marga, Sanne, Theo, Floris, Rose, Linda, and me. Sjoerd and Onno also eat with us. And I would have liked to invite many more people but I couldn’t. After dinner, everyone goes home. Sanne, Richard, Yka, and I stay overnight at the hotel sponsored by NHL-Stensen. Top. It was a busy but well-run day, luck was again on our side. Or did we force it, perhaps our tree has connections? I am satisfied, we have come full circle, we are definitely going to miss it. But it has also been good. Very nice that many people have recognized it as very special. Now, first of all, just to recover and sleep well for a few days. What a long beautiful film this was. Recommended to everyone. Get on your bike and do a tour of Europe. At least with our tree we cycled five thousand three hundred and thirty kilometers in five months.
