Sens

day 109 - 38 km

Joigny - Sens

Under the ringing of the huge bells of the great cathedral of Sens, it is a quarter to six in the afternoon, under which we sit in the sun on a terrace, we wait for Sanne to arrive at the station at 7:30. Today we cycled about forty kilometers from the town hall of Joigny to the town hall of Sens. The route was a bit boring but fast, as we mostly followed the main road. The actual route along the Yonne River unfortunately had too many obstacles for the tree bike. All morning it was heavily overcast with light rain. As of about eleven o’clock, the weather was completely dry and the temperature a good bit above twenty degrees. We used the morning, among other things, to talk to Rijkswaterstaat about passing the afsluitdijk on Sept. 12. They are working on the floodgates and therefore the bike path is not open. But they are working great to find a solution so we can still cross the afsluitdijk. Also thanks to Teja from Leeuwarden who made contact for this a few weeks ago. It’s nice to see how organized the Netherlands is, and it’s also logical safety comes first. But we have traveled over four thousand kilometers and then on the last hundred kilometers of our Tour 2025 an insurmountable obstacle would arise? That can’t be true, can it? We are assuming that we will succeed. We will hear from the Department of Public Works early next week. When I look at the map and see how far we are already, already in Sens, it is almost impossible to imagine that we have been cycling for four months and that in just over three weeks we will cross the afsluitdijk. In Sens, I walk into the stately Hotel de Ville and the mayor’s secretary, Mrs. Keriger, is speaking to me. She listens with interest and I give her a tree, leaflets and a forest book. The mayor Paul-Antoine de Carville, unfortunately, is not here. But she passes it on to him. I am glad the sun has returned. We eat something small near the station in Sens, pick up Sanne, with an hour’s delay, from the station and drive to our log cabin a good half hour’s drive from here. Another beautiful day, we go to bed on time.
