day 103 - 66 km
Le Creusot - Moux en Morvan
We load everything and say goodbye to our Gite. What a fun evening yesterday with Foppe and DaniĆ«lle. On to Le Creusot where the tree bike is under one of the shaved plane trees in front of the Marie. There is some confusion about the route, do we go through the forest or on the slightly larger road. We opt for the latter because, again with the expected heat today, we want to do miles mainly in the morning. I cycle alone for the second time today because both cars have to be taken to the next location in Lormes. It starts with a nice little climb and then we follow the road downhill to Marmagne, going uphill again from there until we cross our route again. Since that turns out to be a dirt road in the forest, we keep following the road until we arrive in Autun, thirty kilometers on the counter, eleven-thirty, there is a market and the town hall has summer vacation. We take a picture of the bike on the market in front of the town hall and drink coffee and water a little further on. Richard goes to load the e-bus, and Daan follows me with car and trailer. We cycle out of Autun again a little later, what a beautiful city, to park the tree bike at the Marie thirty-five kilometers further on in Moux-en-Morvan. Enough for today, sixty-six kilometers up and down hills, in over thirty degrees. Especially the first ten kilometers after Autun are beautiful, narrow winding roads with large trees scattered along the way. Beautiful vistas. Along the way, near Sommant, we cycle past Dutch people, who are often here in the Morvan. Jeroen and his mother Janine are enthusiastic and we drink some cold water. Delicious. We give two little trees and continue cycling through the beautiful landscape of the Morvan. We stop for a moment at a group of French people who sit at a table in their garden under a group of trees and cheer us on. We also tell them about our project and give them two small trees. They are happy. It is five o’clock when we arrive at Eric Gerritsen’s house in Lormes. What a beautiful location. He showed us his grounds and accommodation. Eric is on the Supervisory Board of the Circle4Change Foundation and we are allowed to stay here for a few days and we are very happy to do so. Tomorrow we pick up the tree bike and on Sunday, during the ‘open studios’ in Lormes we will lay out our map for the Marie, where I will give a presentation about Circle4Change on Monday at eleven o’clock. And then on Tuesday we’ll cycle again. I am looking forward to these days where we can combine some rest with beautiful encounters. Around seven o’clock we walk with Eric to the village restaurant where we will have a bite to eat. It turns out to be a culture-loving village with artists’ studios and a few galleries. Interesting how such a reversal comes about. Over dinner, we also talk about Circle4Change and what the next steps might be. When making presentations about the project, it is important not only to look back at what we have accomplished this year with our Tour2025 but also to look ahead to where it is going. What do we want to achieve in the coming years and how do we approach this? Questions that are not yet so easy to answer. Here, too, I want to take some time in the coming days. Just before we want to walk back, the street light goes out. The whole village in darkness. And that is every day at half past ten Eric tells us. A sustainability action. Wonderful. We walk back in the dark and the starry sky is amazing. Occasionally we see a moving “star,” a satellite moving along the celestial vault. A nice parallel to our cycling tree among all the trees and forests. Time to go to sleep.
