Albertville

day 95 - 42 km

Col de la Madeleine (+ 4 km) - Albertville

We begin today with a video call, an interview with an Italian journalist from Venice, Massimilliano. Together with Sanne, I enthusiastically tell our story, about Bosk and how Circle4Change was born out of it. About the importance of new stories, a new balanced relationship with nature, making the impossible come true, about positive activism and the idea of birthday trees. Then I consult with Cargo Cycling about our problem with the brakes of the tree bike. After feedback with the specialists, it turns out that the combination of the long descent and the weight of the tree bike is the cause of the problem, the brake oil gets too hot, and there is really no solution. The tree bike is not designed for this load. What now? While driving from our house to the tree bike located four kilometers beyond the highest point of the Col de la Madelaine, we decide to try it anyway, but safely. That means slow and controlled, so that we maintain control. It is around two o’clock when Richard sends the drone into the air at the top of the Col de la Madelaine. The weather is much better than yesterday. And as we enjoy lunch in the grass, the drone captures the highest point of the Madelaine on film. We ride four kilometers down toward Albertville where the tree bike waits quietly for us. The brake oil pressure is ok again. It has cooled down. In the combination of shooting beautiful drone footage and descending carefully and safely through breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery, I realize how close luck and bad luck are. And how lucky we are this Tour. Even today. The 20-plus kilometer descent was tough, to put it mildly. The problem is that you can’t judge what risk you are taking going downhill. What speed is best? How do I use the brakes efficiently? How do I brake best on the bike? The lack of answers makes me uncertain. Fortunately, the descent is steady and prosperous, and the mountain scenery is fantastic, which makes up for a lot. Reaching the valley feels to us like as big a victory as reaching the summit. We are safely down again. Summit. Thirteen more kilometers to Albertville, through small villages and through forests. The sun is still strong and it is much warmer here than on the mountain. It is around seven o’clock when we park the tree bike next to the town hall in Albertville. This we have made it. We eat nearby in a good French-Italian restaurant, delicious, we think we have earned it. We are satisfied with today’s trip. We also put a tree at the entrance of two town halls. For the rest, our concentration today was entirely on getting down safely, and we succeeded, to which we toast. We give the tree bike some more water and drive towards our house in Ameyzieu-Talissieu. The drive along the lake is beautiful. It’s ten o’clock when we get back. Nice sleep.
