Duna Verde

Day 69 - 70 km

Caorle - Mestre

After loading everything into the cars, we say goodbye to Angelica’s mother, our landlord, and drive to the tree bike parked near the coastal town of Caorle, three quarters of an hour away. Along the way, we recognize many places and buildings we cycled past yesterday as well. It’s quite strange that you recognize certain things and not others, and it’s different for everyone, I think. What is that really about? We park the bus and trailer and prepare the tree bike to cycle seventy kilometers to Mestre, north of Venice. We are two hundred meters on our way and suddenly the electricity fails. We don’t know this yet. How is this possible? We put the tree bike aside and can already see the storm brewing: it’s Saturday morning, probably no one can be reached and how are we going to get to Venice in time? Tomorrow afternoon I have a presentation there in the Biennale program. It makes me restless. How do we handle this? I call Luuk from cycling and he doesn’t know either. We conclude that it might have to do with the rain but how do we solve it? The short version of the story is as follows: We luckily got it done. Around three o’clock the bike is riding again. What transpired? After we finally replaced the display, on the advice of Felix from the motor system company who called from America, the problem appeared to be solved. Probably moisture got into it. Anyway, we did not expect to be able to cycle today, quite a relief. At half past three Daan and I finally cycle towards Jesolo. Richard had meanwhile picked up Sanne from the airport in Venice. We are complete again, very nice and do a mini dance. Sanne takes the red bus and heads for our new house in Mestre, Richard follows us with the car and trailer. The route is beautiful, we cycle a lot along the water, it is quiet here. We eat kilometer to kilometer, because we are going to try to reach the seventy kilometers today, even though we started late. The contrast is great. Some roads are super quiet and others super busy. We notice that the people in the cars approaching us look happier than in the cars behind us. They have a hard time overtaking us and don’t see as well. Logical, actually. We cycle along the coastal zone but do not see the sea. The vegetation, the birds and the dikes betray that the sea must be nearby. And so we slowly approach Venice. It is around eight o’clock when we cycle through the center of Mestre and a little later are warmly welcomed by GianLuca, our new landlord. We park the trailer, bus and tree bike inside the gate and already smell the food when we enter. Sanne has already cooked again. We are tired but everyone is happy that we made it and it is really a record, seventy kilometers within five hours. At this location we will stay for five nights, which gives peace of mind. Tomorrow afternoon to the Arsenal of the Biennale for my presentation in the GENS public program. What a day it was again. Whether by chance, luck or whatever, we have everything back on track. And we are in Venice, well, in Mestre.
