Puchberg am Schneeberg

day 50 - 62 km

Wien - Pernitz

What a day today. From a somewhat drizzly Vienna, we left the city through heavy traffic and into the countryside. Two million inhabitants is quite a big city and you can feel it. The contrast between the city and the hilly wooded landscape is great. Nice to be in nature again after three days in Vienna. We cycle with Richard up and down hills, but more up than down. The scenery is beautiful. And as the weather clears it only gets more beautiful. From Vienna we cycle south-west to Grub which is again on our line. And from there to Mayerling, where we eat soup. We are thirty kilometers from today’s route, which is eighty kilometers. We cycle on, the climbs get more serious, the descents too, occasionally full on the brakes. Richard exchanges places with Daan and one hill after another presents itself. The landscape changes, the rolling hills before Vienna have been exchanged for steeper hills with more of a “Milka-effect”, more alpine meadow-like. After fifty kilometers, it is around six o’clock, we agree to do another ten kilometers to Pernitz, we are not going to make the eighty today. But it will be quite an adventure. The car with trailer cannot handle the unpaved slope. We’ll leave it there to pick up tomorrow. And with the tree bike we try to get to the top, more than 250 meters ascent in 2.5 km, from 500 meters to 750 meters altitude. And steep, 10% on average. It succeeds, but the effort is enormous, Richard and Daan help push, alternately panting and puffing out, and so we finally get the tree bike to the top. It’s hard to describe and it’s a great presentation, if we do say so ourselves. At least we don’t have to go to the “gym” again tonight. The reward is great, we glide in the low evening sun for several kilometers slowly down through a beautiful mountainous landscape to Pernitz. And there we meet, “we reap coincidence here too,” a group of people celebrating a party at a store that has been taken over. Super friendly and enthusiastic they are. We are offered a beer and they do a collection for our project and raise a hundred euros. Great right. A little later Markus arrives, he was called and sits on the city council of Pernitz. I tell him about our project and he is super excited. How nice it would be if the municipality of Pernitz also joined the Circle4Change family. After this spontaneous meeting, we have almost forgotten about the huge climb. We are allowed to park the tree bike at the town hall and drive to our accommodation in Bad Fischau-Brunn, about twenty minutes away. It is 8:30 when we get there and fortunately Sanne already has dinner ready, how delicious it is again. It does really well. We are tired and fulfilled. What a day!
